LA schools save 5000 jobs through furloughs

LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Unified School District has rescinded about 5,000 layoffs planned for teachers, counselors, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other district employees.

The school board on Tuesday approved employee contracts for the 2011-12 school year that stipulate employees will take four unpaid furlough days to help close a $408 million budget deficit.
